Let’s Talk About Workwear!
Born during the Industrial Revolution and evolving ever since for both safety and comfort, workwear is a vital part of the weekly attire for many a worker.
The term “workwear” has traditionally referred to the tough, durable garments worn by cowboys, farmers and manual laborers. But a few of these clothing items have risen beyond their hardscrabble origins to become popular fashion.
The Fabric of Life
Denim was born out of necessity. During the California Gold Rush in the 1840’s, miners needed sturdy and durable workpants. Levi Strauss came to their rescue by creating pants made from heavyweight denim which was dyed with indigo – hence the name “blue jeans.”
In the 1890’s, copper rivets were added to reinforce the stress points on pocket corners. Then came belt loops and zipper flies in the 1920’s.
