It actually has both a name and a purpose. It’s called a jacron, and its purpose, of course, is brand recognition.
History of the Jacron
Levi Strauss & Co. first introduced its iconic “Two Horse” leather patch in 1873. On May 20, 1873, Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis patented their first pair of jeans. From then up until the company was officially dubbed Levi Strauss & Co. in 1928, the jeans (called “overalls”) were commonly referred to as “the Two Horse brand.”
The patch symbolized the pull-strength of the company’s hard-working, riveted work trousers. According to a Levi’s historian:
“From the leather back patch, customers could immediately determine if the pant was a genuine pair of Levi’s overalls with the high quality they expected. Even those who were illiterate or who spoke a foreign language recognized Levi’s products from the famous Two Horse trademark illustration on the leather back patch.”
In the 1950s, other jeans manufacturers, such as Lee® and Wrangler®, began to gain popularity. That’s when the leather patch was swapped out for jacron paper, which was less expensive but still durable.
Did you know that Levi’s regularly plays around with its iconic label patch? The company might change the direction of the text, its sizing, and/or its coloring. Even more surprising, their European stores provide “print bars” where Levi’s customers are encouraged to personalize it themselves.
