Is Your Christmas Sweater Ugly Enough?
The sights and sounds of the holiday season will soon be upon us. Twinkling lights… snow crunching beneath your feet… the angelic voices of carolers. And the annual eyesore that is the Ugly Christmas Sweater.
In the Beginning…
It all started in the 1950s with “Jingle Bell Sweaters.” These innocuous fashions featured discrete Christmas-themed elements such as fir trees, snowflakes or deer.
At that time, the holiday was becoming increasingly commercialized, and sweaters of this type were mass produced for the first time.
This first generation of ugly sweaters remained modestly popular for decades. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the Christmas sweater gained mainstream adoration.
Somewhere around this time, the sweaters morphed from relatively tame jingle bells and holiday-inspired themes into genuine, dyed-in-the-wool UGLY. Nevertheless, they became hip and popular back then.
In retrospect, this over-the-top tackiness probably created the perfect storm for a fashion trend that 30 years later would be dubbed the “Ugly Christmas Sweater.”
Today, thanks to social media, the popularity of these ugly sweaters has now reached a whole new level. Which means a quick visit to the neighborhood thrift store or rummaging through grandpa’s closet will no longer suffice.
